It occupies the place where the main altar once stood when the Nieuwe Kerk was still a Catholic church. The monumental marble tomb is a tribute to the naval hero, who died in 1667 off the coast of Sicily at the age of 69. It was designed by the sculptor Rombout Verhulst.
